2017 Jaguar XE “Realcar” Closed Loop Aluminum Recycling

The 2017 Jaguar XE, an all-new small luxury sport sedan which recently went on sale in the United States, has impressive critics and car enthusiasts with its wonderful blend of style, power, performance and English refinement. The XE is also groundbreaking on the environmental front. Under the Jaguar Land Rover “REALCAR” Aluminum recycling project, the Jaguar XE is the first vehicle in the world to incorporate a pioneering closed-loop recycled grade of aluminum.

Jaguar Land Rover “Realcar” Aluminum Recycling Project

Jaguar Land Rover has reclaimed over 50,000 tons of aluminum scrap, the weight of 200,000 XE body shells, back into the production process during 2015/16, preventing more than 500,000 tons of CO2 equivalent from entering the atmosphere by not using primary aluminum material. The figures are a result of project ‘REALCAR’ which involves 11 UK press shops implementing a closed-loop, segregating waste aluminum scrap so that it can be sent back into production to be re-melted into recycled aluminum sheet for use in Jaguar Land Rover vehicles.

Jaguar XE and “Realcar” Aluminum

With the 2017 Jaguar XE’s recent arrival in dealer showrooms in the United States, eco-minded luxury car shoppers should find great appeal in the fact the pioneering “Realcar” Aluminum project has contributed to the award-winning sport sedan’s aluminum-intensive body. The Jaguar Land Rover-led research project, part funded by Innovate UK, also saw the development of a recycled aluminum-based alloy which can accept a higher percentage of the recovered scrap. In 2014, the Jaguar XE became the first car in the world to use this innovative high-strength aluminum alloy, developed by project partner Novelis.

Benefits of Jaguar Land Rover “Realcar” Aluminum

Recovering aluminum utilizing the “Realcar” Aluminum closed-loop method offers huge sustainability benefits, with aluminum recycling requiring up to 95% less energy than primary aluminum production. The success of “Realcar” Aluminum marks a significant step towards Jaguar Land Rover’s goal of having up to 75% recycled aluminum content in their vehicle body structures by 2020. Also the “Realcar” Aluminum has since been tested and introduced in the lightweight aluminum bodies of the all-new Jaguar XF and F-PACE models.
